Tourism: Jonas Laurince, “first Haitian” in the program Google guide
Haitian journalist Jonas Laurince participated in the 3rd edition of the Google guide competition held in San Francisco, California from October 16 to 18, 2018.
The former Minustah FM journalist was one of the 150 attendees and representatives who were present at Google headquarters in the United States for the three-day training session.
In order to participate in this contest, Jonas had to register as a local guide. Back in April, Google launched a contest where a local guide could record a video in English to talk about himself and share it on YouTube. To qualify, a participant was required to reach at least reach level 5. Mr. Laurince is currently at level 9 out of 10 possible levels. He has already collected more than 80 thousand points thanks to thousands of photos and places he has published that have been viewed millions of times.
Jonas Laurince is the first Haitian and the only Caribbean to have been invited to this great Google contest in which 51 countries were represented. Asked about the goal and the awards he earned, he saysthe contest is not meant to reward participants with a trophy. There is no ranking, it is rather a training on new Google software and how to become a better local guide.
