Haiti’s debt to Venezuela is estimated at US $1.8 billion
Haiti’s central bank has published statistics that put Haiti’s total external debt at US $3.1 billion. That amount includes 1.8 billion owed to Venezuela which is Haiti’s largest creditor. The amount reflects credit contracted under the Petrocaribe agreement.
Two senatorial commissions have estimated the debt to Venezuela at around US $3.8 billion. Some former prime ministers had argued that the amount announced by the senators did not reflect the reality of Haitian finances. A former head of government had explained that the amount announced was greater than the totality of Haiti’s debt. According to the central bank’s statistics the total debt (internal and external) is greater than US $3.1 billion.
