Taiwan grants $150 million loan to Haiti for energy

On Wednesday December 19th, Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bocchit Edmond and his Taiwanese counterpart Dr. Jaushieh Joseph Wu, signed a loan agreement worth 150 million US dollars, for the modernization of Haiti’s electrical network.

According to Haitian authorities the money will be used to produce and market 800 megawatts of electricity.

Minister Bocchit Edmond said both nations share political interests and believes that strengthening bilateral cooperation in the areas of energy and training would create a win-win situation for both countries.

The Chancellor was accompanied by a large delegation composed of special advisor to the President, Charles Jean-Jacques; the governor of Haiti’s central bank Jean Baden Dubois, the Director of Haiti’s electricity networ Hervé Pierre-Louis and his chief of staff Jude Piquant.

The project will be executed by a Taiwanese construction company and the work could last 2 years. Key project activities include the construction and renovation of substations and transmission pylons.
